Is it me or is it Memorex?

Memorex DVD+R DL

I recently bought a cake-box of Memorex 8x Double Layer DVD+R disks. I was mostly attracted by the price (~30 USD) and my positive previous experience with recordable media from Memorex, but this time it did not fly.

It simply refused to burn in my Samsung SH-S203N with standard speed 2.4x.

I have the latest BIOS and I tried standard Vista burning function, Nero 8, and Ashampoo Burning Studio 7. But no luck. In addition, I could not set the lower speed in all these beautiful programs. Finally I fired up ImageBurn (free program!) and only with that application and speed 1x (as slow as 1.5 hour per one dual layer DVD) I managed that at last.

DVD Identifier revealed that the media is actually RITEK Corp.

I also looked at the mighty and knowledgeable forums and was a bit surprised to see that Memorex media (DL at least) is notorious for its selective quality: as reported it is too picky for hardware—sometimes burns with flying colors and sometimes it is complete abortion. That is believed directly connected to the manufacturer Ritek Corp.

What should we buy then?

What should we buy then? Forum gurus recommend Taiyo Yuden (manufacturer), Verbatim, or Sony.

Yet another lesson that cheep stuff could cost you as much as the expensive one. Plus entertainment included.
