AMT subsystem Failure
Troubles with Adobe CS3 and CS4 Products licenses [UPDATED]
30 March 2009 by Jean De Daumier-SmithAMT subsystem Failure. The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically in Adobe CS3 and CS4.
[UPDATED! See below]
To continue story about hackers vs. Adobe I have to say, hackers have won again. I do not support piracy, but in this case (similar to Microsoft's Windows story) I believe piracy supports the company giving the enormous boost of software usage and popularly, plus epidemic-like distribution around the world (just look at the torrent listings on Photoshop).

AMT subsystem Failure
Adobe releases are expensive, professionals will buy them, but regular Joe user—probably not. But this not the story. The story is new licensing mechanism in CS3 (continued in CS4). If you have seen message like the one below—fear not:

AMT Subsystem Failure
AMT subsystem Failure. The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support. -- Sounds not too good, right?
There could be another one:

Adobe licensing stopped working
Licensing for this product has stopped working. You must repair the problem (I did not know I could repair the problem!) by uninstalling, etc...
Solution could be very simple: Go to Services (Administrative Tools -> Services) and check service "FLEXnet Licensing Service" — it should not be disabled! Put it to manual mode at least.
This service marked as from Macrovision Europe Ltd, so odds are some nervous users could switch it off! Personally I would switch off anything from Macrovision...
Now you know it is related to new mechanism of Adobe CS3 and CS4 licensing and not to the fact that you might be using Photoshop illegally.
What Adobe has to say

Full error message: Licensing for this product has stopped working. You cannot use the product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT administrator or Adobe customer support for help.
As per Abode, “Although mentioned in the error message, uninstalling and reinstalling your product is not likely to be effective unless this is the first time you have launched the product, and you received error messages during the product installation.
Various issues may cause this error, including the following:
If the error occurs immediately after installation, then it is likely that a component needs to be updated to be compatible with your operating system, or the component needs to be configured slightly differently for your system. If the product previously started successfully at least once, or if it has been in heavy use, then it is likely that a system resource issue (such as low memory, low disk space, or simultaneous launch of several programs) has caused a temporary failure in the licensing system or has caused some corruption of the permanent licensing data. If an interruption occurred during the installation process, then it may prevent the licensing system from functioning correctly.”
There are number of solutions listed on that webpage depending on which OS you use and other circumstances.
The first fix that Adobe propose is to apply “Adobe Licensing Repair Tool” , which is needed to be run “if the error “Licensing for this product has stopped working” is preventing an Adobe application from launching.
The tool has been developed to upgrade the licensing service and repair a license file for: Acrobat 8 and 9, Creative Suite 3 and 4, Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, Director, Technical Communication Suite.”
The second solution is the same I proposed—“Set the FLEXnet Licensing Service to Manual and Start the service”.
There are some others, check out the page.
