PC Security

"Introduction to PGP" by Philip Zimmermann, creator of Pretty Good Privacy, an encryption software package:

I remember a conversation in 1991 with Brian Snow, a highly placed senior cryptographer with the NSA (National Security Agency). He said he would never trust an encryption algorithm designed by someone who had not "earned their bones" by first spending a lot of time cracking codes. That made a lot of sense. I observed that practically no one in the commercial world of cryptography qualifies under this criterion. "Yes," he said with a self-assured smile, "and that makes our job at NSA so much easier." A chilling thought. I didn't qualify either.

Please look at the screenshot on the right. Eset has just found a new virus. That is a small beauty of heuristic analysis.

Ugly passwords

I wish I had "billywonka" password at work. I just like it. Alas, the corporate policy prescribes that I should use something like "L00kH0wUgly1t1s", which is honestly far more secure. But then we forced to change it every month or so. Therefore, what most people do, they have something like "Oct0ber01" and they change it to "Oct0ber02", "Oct0ber03", etc. And then ... once you change all your two hundred and twelve other passwords so often you start writing them down on yellow notes close to the monitor...

So, initially unbreakable "L00kH0wUgly1t1s" becomes "billywonka" or even "billy". And then you do not need a "Jack-the-Ripper" to crack it, it is just a matter of good guessing. Why waste the effort?
